Closing old credit card accounts can hurt more than help your credit scores. Credit scores do not count closed credit card accounts and your debt to limit ratio can be negatively impacted to lower your credit scores. Your best bet is to just cut up the card so the account stays on your credit report. Roughly 15% of your credit score is calculated from you credit history. When you cancel the card, the credit history gets canceled as well. (Should I close my credit card?)
